Para Medical Courses in interdisciplinary medical subjects are becoming enormously important in Health Care Systems. In the recent years, there has been a growing need for qualified and well-trained Para Medical personnel who form an integral component of medical profession. In order to meet the increasing demand for qualified and trained Para Medical personnel it is necessary to impart the training to the eligible and interested students.

      The Man Power Committee constituted by the Govt. of Karnataka has emphasized that there is an acute shortage of Para Medical personnel in our State. Taking this into consideration the State Govt. has constituted this Board in the year 1997 to control and to conduct the Para Medical Courses.

      The Para Medical Board formed by the Government of Karnataka is having overall control over the Govt. and Pvt. Institutions running Para Medical Courses in the State. The main functions of the Board are grant of affiliation, regulate admissions and control the functioning of Institutions running Para Medical courses with respect to importing quality education programme and conduction of examinations.

OBJECTIVES

      The objectives of the Para Medical Courses is to ensure the scientific training during the course of study, thus the trainee acquires adequate knowledge and skill in his/her field and he/she shall be able to carry out:

      a. Various laboratory tests independently without an error, perform, investigative or curative procedures with accuracy and precision as a responsible professional and thereby assist the clinicians in diagnosis and treatment.

      b. Manage laboratories or units confidently with adequate knowledge to handle, operate and take care of various equipments, instruments and materials used.

      c. Develop initiative and competence in order to avail self employment opportunities.

      d. Develop expertise to perform various tests and to interpret the results.

      e. Fulfill the need of qualified manpower and well-trained para medical personnel who will contribute a lot to Health Care services and Patient care system.

      f. The successful candidates after the period of training will become eligible for appointment as Technicians or Assistants in various departments of Medical / Dental College, Hospitals, Primary Health Centers, Clinical Laboratories at district and taluk level, Nursing Homes and also in other schemes of National Health Programmes. The Para Medical Courses provide great employment opportunities and also ensures the availability of sufficient number of qualified and trained Para Medical Personnel for the upliftment of a good Health Care System.

FUNCTIONS

      To process the application of institutions both Government and Private who have applied for permission to start various Para Medical Courses (both existing and new) and to arrange for the inspection of such institution with respect to infrastructure and other facilities required for smooth conduct of such courses and to submit the report to the Government for sanction of the courses by duly fixing intake.

     a. To conduct periodical inspections of the Institutions which are already running such Para Medical courses for grant of affiliation and renewal of affiliation.

      b. To frame the rules, regulations and guidelines for such courses in terms of eligibility for admissions, age, duration of the course, infrastructure facilities for conducting theory and practical classes with required teaching personnel

      c. To frame the syllabus for the courses and to specify the scheme of examination in detail.

    d. The Board will act as "Board of Examination Authority" and shall conduct the examinations and issue Diploma Certificates to the successful candidates.

      e. To grant examination centre to the desirous institutions after conducting inspection, where ever necessary.
